William D. "Bill" Sutherly Obituary

William D. “Bill” Sutherly, 74, of Troy, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Kettering Medical Center in Kettering, Ohio, following a brief illness. He was born March 9, 1947, in Troy to the late Wesley L. and Catherine (Miller) Sutherly.

He married his wife of 51 years, Carol A. (Yingst) Sutherly, on July 25, 1970, in Fletcher, Ohio, and she survives.

In addition, he is survived by his three children: Ben (Julia) Sutherly of Troy; David (Linde) Sutherly of New Carlisle; and Catherine (Tom) DeMange of Troy; five grandchildren: Alexia Zirkle, Austin Sutherly, Joe Sutherly, Dan Sutherly, and Caleb William DeMange; two step-grandchildren: Dylan DeMange and Ashlyn DeMange; brother and sisters-in-law: Richard and Rita Sutherly of Troy, and Bonnie Sutherly of Troy; sister and brother-in-law: Barbara and Tom Fulton of Troy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by an infant brother, James Sutherly; brothers Robert W. Sutherly and John E. Sutherly; and niece, Catherine (Fulton) Bensman.

Bill graduated from Miami East High School in 1965 and The Ohio State University in 1969. He was a member of Cove Spring Church, served as an Elizabeth Township trustee for nearly 15 years, and was a former board member of Pioneer Electric Cooperative. He taught industrial arts from 1969 to 1978 at Wayne High School, where he was a popular teacher. He and his three brothers operated a successful and diversified grain and livestock operation for several decades, and he remained active in the farming business until his death. He also was a part owner in the family grain elevator in New Carlisle, Ohio: Miami Valley Feed and Grain. He was an advocate for farmland preservation. He enjoyed participating in sports and 4-H livestock competitions in his youth, then in watching his children and grandchildren carry on those interests. He loved his Ohio State Buckeyes, horse racing, and antiques, with a weakness for old chairs, Oriental rugs, and several other “good deals” that crossed his path. Ever loyal to his family and community, his kindness and contrariness endeared him to many. His frugal ways made for some memorable family vacations and plenty of “creative fixes” around the farm.
