Melvin R. Gass

Melvin R. Gass, age 94, of Troy, OH passed away on August 12, 2020 at the Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit, Troy.  He was born on September 28, 1925 in Piqua, OH to the late Otto and Gladys (Koon) Gass. He was raised from infancy by his late grandparents: Truman and Maude Hinka.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years: Phyllis Shane Gass; daughter and son-in-law: Denise and Kenneth Zirkle of Tucson, AZ; son and daughter-in-law: Dennis and Tammy Gass of Troy; brother: Eric Warburton of Washington; grandchildren: Matthew Shane Zirkle, Rusty A. Gass and Jessica L. Earl; great grandchildren: Brycen Stover and Ryder Stover.

Melvin served his country in the US Army during WWII in the Amphibious Engineers in the Philippines and Australia.  He was a member of the First United Church of Christ.  He was the oldest living Past Master of the Franklin Lodge #14F&AM.  He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #256.  He was an avid camper,  and enjoyed boating, fishing and motorcycling.  He was an active member of the Roamin’ Trojans Camping Club, a member of Ohio State Association (OSA) of FCRV and National Association of FCRV (Family Campers and RVers).  He and his wife Phyllis received plaques in 1995 for their devotion and service to both OSA and FCRV..

Melvin was well-known for home remodeling and furniture refinishing through the years.  He retired after 28 years of service from Kitchen Aid/Hobart Corporation as an experimental model maker.  In his retirement, he held the position of general maintenance person for several local businesses.

Masonic services will be held at 3PM on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at Baird Funeral Home.  Funeral services will follow with Rev. Lauren Allen officiating.    Friends may call from 2-3PM on Sunday prior to the services. Private interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Troy.
