John J. "Jack" Lockwood Obituary

John J. “Jack” Lockwood, age 80, of Troy, OH passed away on August 27, 2022 at the Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County in Troy.  John was born on December 9, 1941 in Bryn Mawr, PA to the late Edward J. and Margaret M. (Osborne) Lockwood.

Jack is survived by his wife: Beatrice “Bea” (Thames) Lockwood; daughter and son-in-law: Kate and John Fulton of Troy; son and daughter-in-law: Ian and Anne Lockwood of Hillsborough, NC; five grandchildren: Caroline, Will and Nick Lockwood and Luke and Harlan Fulton; brother and sister-in-law: Ret. Lt. Col. Edward (Bea) Lockwood, of Honolulu, HI, brother-in-law: William Bluhm of Pentwater, MI, and numerous extended family.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters: Nancy Schultz and Gail Bluhm.

In his youth, Jack filled his days playing basketball and pulling pranks on his older sisters. Holidays were mostly spent on the shore in Avalon, NJ, where he refined his infamous body surfing skills. Jack had the knack for taking any wave all the way to the shallows.

Jack's talent and love for basketball carried him through school. He was a graduate of the Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, VA.  He received his undergraduate degree from Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA (where he was a member of the basketball team and the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity) and his graduate degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL.

Jack met and married Bea in 1967, while teaching at the University of Northern Iowa. He transitioned into corporate America and built a successful sales and marketing career in the heavy construction equipment industry. Work carried Jack around the globe and relocated his family throughout the eastern United States.

One of Jack’s personal mission statements was ‘to make a difference in the world by demonstrating and enjoying balance in my life’. While he worked hard, he also played hard, doing anything from basketball, to any racket sport, to bird hunting, to kayaking, swimming, sailing and fly fishing.  Jack loved to stay active with his family. Most activities involved a friendly competition, with lots of encouragement and laughter along the way. His passion for sailing took family and friends on many adventures in Lake Michigan, down the Atlantic coast and into the Caribbean.

Over his lifetime, Jack loved to watch his children and grandchildren compete. He was always prepared with words of encouragement and wisdom for continued improvement (mentally and physically). His encouraging spirit extended beyond sports and guided many family and friends along their personal and professional paths.  He was a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00PM on September 24, 2022 at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, OH with Pastor Greg Morrow officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00AM – 12:00PM at the funeral home.  Interment will follow the service in Casstown Cemetery, Casstown, OH.
