James A. Dawson

James A. Dawson of Troy, OH passed away October 3, 2018.  He was preceded in death by his wife of over sixty years, Shirley A. (Weiss) Dawson and by his parents, Charles and Estella (Gant) Dawson.

James was born February 2, 1933, in Wapakoneta, OH.  He graduated from Stivers High School in Dayton and attended Manchester College and Wittenberg University receiving Bachelor and Master degrees.  Also, he received science certification from Ohio State University.  He was a teacher, coach, and administrator at several Ohio schools including the Bethel Local and Huber Heights City districts.  After retirement from teaching, he worked for Arbor Gate/Knights Inn in Troy.

He was an active member of the Troy Church of the Brethren for over fifty years, serving a number of roles for the congregation.  Also, he served Troy Housing Opportunities United (THOU), volunteered at Brukner Nature Center, and helped with local cross country and track meets.  He was a long-time gardener who offered his produce to church members and to the local food pantry.  Also, he enjoyed baseball, bike riding, and walking.

James is survived by seven children:  Annette Dawson of Lebanon, OH; Nadine and George Moore of Lexington, VA; Doug and Mariely Dawson of Ashland, OH; Don Dawson and Kim Williams of Shawnee, KS; Paul Dawson of Troy, OH; Steve Dawson of Woodside, CA; and Karen and Mark Durbin of Springboro, OH.   He is also survived by one sister, Shirley (and Dale) Anderson of Fort Wayne, IN, and by three grandchildren.

A private graveside service will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Troy.  A memorial service will be held at the Troy Church of the Brethren, 1431 W. Main St., Troy, OH, 45373, on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at 2:30 pm.  Pastor Jon Keller will officiate.  The family will receive condolences after this service.
