Yuriko U. Washington, age 75, of Troy, OH, passed away on April 1, 2026 at Miami Valley Hospital. She was born on April 14, 1950 in Fukuoka, Japan to the late Yujiro and Fumie (Matuo) Umezaki.
Yuriko is survived by her children: Sheela L. (Paul Hamilton) Washington of Los Angeles, CA and Edward J. (Lindsey Stephens) Washington III of Troy; grandchildren: Izaiah Washington, Samauri Washington, Cassius Washington, Nia Hamilton and Kai Hamilton; sister: Sadako Ogata of Fukuoka, Japan; and sister-in-law: Shelia Fairley. In addition to her parents, Yuriko was preceded in death by her husband: Edward J. “Sarge” Washington, Jr.
Yuriko was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan, where she spent her early years rooted in family, tradition, and community. She attended Fukuoka Futaba School, a prestigious and historic Catholic institution for girls, where she studied from kindergarten through high school. She later pursued her passion for communication by studying English and Journalism.
After completing her education, Yuriko moved to Guam, where she married her husband in 1975, beginning a life centered on love, resilience and adventure. Following their move to the United States, she embraced her role as a dedicated military wife and a deeply devoted mother, providing unwavering support to her family through every chapter of life.
Yuriko went on to build a career working with several Japanese companies as a buyer and translator, where her skill, professionalism and cultural insight were highly valued.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures - cooking meals for those she loved, cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers and, most of all, spending meaningful time with her children and grandchildren. Yuriko had a beautiful way of living fully in the present, always embracing the “here and now,” a mindset that left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
