Melvyn Douglas Roeth, age 85, of Piqua, OH passed away on August 17, 2026 at StoryPoint of Troy. He was born on January 20, 1941 in Troy, OH to the late Herbert Ernest and Gladys Rebecca (Phillips) Roeth.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Marilyn A. (Smith) Roeth; sons and daughter-in-law: Mike Roeth of Fort Wayne, IN, Mark and Paula Roeth of Troy; daughter and son-in-law: Marsha and Ken DeWeese of Piqua; grandchildren: Ryan Roeth, Colin (Elena) Roeth, Kyle (Lauren) Roeth, Lindsey (Clay) Colvin, Ty Roeth, Justin DeWeese, Christian DeWeese and Cameron (Rachel) DeWeese; great grandchildren: Makenzie, Mason, Jackson, Isabelle, Lyla, Nora and Gunnar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother: Kenneth Roeth; daughter-in-law: Letty Roeth, granddaughter: Logan Roeth and brother-in-law: Tom Smith.
Melvyn was a 1959 graduate of Miami East High School and built his life around farming, family, and community. He served in the National Guard and was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church and Staunton Grange in Troy. He formerly served on the Ohio Pork Producer’s Council, as a Miami County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor and as a Miami County 4-H Advisor. As a self-employed farmer, he worked with livestock while raising corn and soybeans, managing over 550 acres of land. Each year, he raised more than 2,000 hogs, and their farm became a gathering place where they hosted countless community events. Beyond the farm, he shared his knowledge as an adult education instructor at Upper Valley Career Center, teaching courses in farming, accounting, and financial management. He also worked with The Ohio State University, assisting with field work and financial record keeping. His love for conservation led him and his family to build a cabin and establish a wetland on their property through a conservation program project which he took great pride in. His life has been filled with adventure, from camping trips across the country to several cruises. Since their marriage on November 11, 1961 in Covington, Ohio, his greatest joy was sharing experiences with his wife, Marilyn.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the First Lutheran Church of Troy. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 21, 2026 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Baird Funeral Home in Troy. Interment will take place in Casstown Cemetery, following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities at 1625 Troy Sidney Rd, Troy, OH 45373 (this organization, known as Riverside, was originated by Melvyn’s parents and others in the community who saw the need in the 1950s), or First Lutheran Church, 2899 W Main St, Troy, OH 45373.
