Carl "Smoke" Shoup

In Loving Memory of Carl “Smoke” Shoup

Carl “Smoke” Shoup, 87, a lifelong resident of Casstown, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on June 17, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on October 13, 1938, to the late Howard and Lucy Shoup, Smoke lived a life built on hard work, deep family ties, strong faith, and a lasting commitment to his community.

He married the love of his life, Mary, on November 7, 1959, and together they shared 65 years of marriage, remaining inseparable until her passing in 2025. Smoke was the steady foundation of the family they built together, serving as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

A 1956 graduate of Miami Central High School, Smoke worked briefly at Hobart Brothers before dedicating his life to farming, a way of life that brought him purpose, pride, and joy.

Rooted in faith and service, Smoke was a lifelong member of Lostcreek United Church of Christ and his dedication to others was reflected in decades of community leadership. He served as a Lostcreek Township Trustee for 32 years and was a member of the Miami County Fair Board for 30 years, including 15 years as president. He also served on the board of directors at Troy Grain. Smoke was a 50-year member of the Christiansburg Masonic Lodge and was active in the Troy Elks, Troy Fish & Game, and the Miami County Farm Bureau Council. He also enjoyed many years of bowling at Sherwood Lanes.

Smoke is survived by his children: Jeff Shoup; Susan (Fred) Smith; Catherine (Derrin) Brenner; and Karen (Jeff) Patton. He was a proud grandfather to Kristen (Jon) McConnell, Jennifer (Ben) Meade, Dannielle (Kevin) Lecky, Emily Smith, Lucy Smith, and Megan (Adam) Knepper. He was a cherished great-grandfather to Kaleb, Jacie, and Joey McConnell; Hazel Meade; and Nick, Alex, Sawyer, Hayden, and Parker Lecky. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jerry “Butch” Spears; sister-in-law, Nancy Spears; brother-in-law, Tom Kirk; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, cheered for Ohio State, and loved a good tractor pull. Smoke will be remembered for his sense of humor, quiet strength, unwavering devotion to his family, and lifelong commitment to the community he loved.
