Barbara "Babs" J. Young

Barbara J. “Babs” Young, age 91, of Troy, OH, passed away on August 28, 2026 at her residence. She was born on February 13, 1935 in Greenville, OH to the late Job and Ethel (Alexander) Mitchell. She was married to her husband of 61 years: H. David “Dave” Young, and he preceded her in death on December 16, 2014.

Babs is survived by her daughter: Diana Steck of Troy; brother and sister-in-law: Dick (Linda) Mitchell of TN; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and great friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: George Mitchell, Paul Mitchell, Jim Mitchell, Betty Brandt, Bob Mitchell, and JoAnn Cecil; and son-in-law: Duke Steck.

Babs was a 1953 graduate of Troy High School. She was a 40 year employee of JC Penney in both Troy and later Piqua locations. She was a member of Cove Spring Church. Babs loved to maintain her home and work in her yard. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, often making Christmas trays for neighbors and friends, which contained her famous peanut brittle. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and embroidery. Babs will be remembered for her somewhat dry sense of humor, often saying “You might as well laugh as cry”.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 4, 2026 at Baird Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Casstown Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
