George E. Lewis, 84, of Troy, Ohio, passed away peacefully June 8, 2017, at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit in Troy.

He was born November 24, 1932 in Eldridge, KY, the son of late Lillie Gilbert Lewis and Perry Estill Lewis.  He was the youngest of 5 siblings.  On December 29, 1956, he married Nancy Charlene Riggsby, who survives.

He proudly served his Country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.  In 1956 he and his wife and oldest daughter moved to Ohio, where he settled in Troy to raise his family.  Mr. Lewis retired from B. F. Goodrich Corporation and was a member of the UAW Union, Local 128, in Troy.  He was a 37-year member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM in Troy.  George was a great story teller and was known for his wit; his eyes sparkled while telling jokes.  He was a motorcycle enthusiast and a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying his airplane in earlier years.  He was the original Mr. Fix It, loved gardening and canning his vegetables.  He taught his children to work hard and be humble.  His practical wisdom and fierce love of family impacted seven generations and will remain in the hearts of his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Gail and Monte Snyder of Biloxi, MS; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Matthew Bretland of Troy; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Melissa Lewis of Concord, California; grandchildren, Christopher and Emilie Martin, Casstown, Ohio; Casey and Carla Martin, Troy; Sean Martin and Jessica Price, Troy, Dylan Lewis and Erik Lewis, Concord, California; Mollie Bretland, Troy; and Jenna Bretland of Covington, Kentucky, eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.  George is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Willard Gilbert and Betty Lewis, of Texas.  Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Essie Ellen Lewis Swanson, and brothers, Carlos K. Lewis and Robert Lewis.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Baird Funeral Home in Troy.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 12, 2017 at Baird Funeral Home with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Troy.
