Patrick Joseph Groff died suddenly on November 18, 2023, surrounded by family, and fortified with the Holy Water of the church. He was born on August 6, 1954, in Troy, Ohio, the oldest of three children of Norbert and Rita (Madigan) Groff who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sister: Peggy Scott; his nephew and niece: Alex (Katy) Scott and Megan (Jason) Chitwood; three great nieces: Nola and Lily Scott and Annie Chitwood and numerous Groff and Madigan family members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother David and brother-in-law James.
Pat was born and raised in Troy, Ohio. Even though he lived at Brookdale Piqua for the last three years, he was forever a Troy Trojan. He was a 1972 graduate of Troy High School where he played on the varsity golf team. He attended Bowling Green State University where he earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics and was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. After graduation, Pat was a math teacher and golf coach at Lehman Catholic High School in Sidney, Ohio, a role he would describe as his dream job. He also worked at Defense Electronics Supply Company (DESC) in Dayton, Ohio as a supply chain analyst. After trying his skills in several different jobs, he came back to what he loved doing the most by being a substitute math teacher in several area school districts.
Despite the crosses he had to bear, Pat was a devoted son and loving brother, uncle, and cousin. He loved all kinds of sports and especially enjoyed rooting for his Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Reds, Dayton Flyers and of course his Troy Trojans. Dates and numbers were second nature to Pat as he could recall more trivia and history than most people ever learn. More than anything, he loved being with members of his immediate and extended family and looked forward to every Groff and Madigan reunion that he could attend. He wished for so much in his life but accepted his path faithfully and with resilience. May his journey home with his parents and brother be filled with everlasting joy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, November 27, 2023, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Troy with the Reverend Steve Shoup officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Troy. Visitation is before the funeral from 9:00 - 10:00 am at Baird Funeral Home in Troy.
