Larry D. Salyer, age 78, of Troy, died on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Ohio Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit in Troy. He was born on June 12, 1943 in Indianapolis, IN to Harold and Virginia Salyer.
Larry attended Brunnerdale High School Seminary and graduated from Troy High School in 1962. He served in the US Army from 1965-1967 in the 2nd Recon Squad, 2nd Armored Calvary, stationed in Germany.
Larry married Sondra K. MacKellar on March 31, 1978 in Piqua and they shared 43 years together. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his stepson: Scott Hogan; and his favorite dog: Sammy.
Larry retired from the Reynolds & Reynolds Company in Dayton after 42½ years. He was a Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian Ad Litem (CASA/GAL) from 2006-2021. Larry was also a former member of the Troy Police Department Auxiliary. His favorite hobbies were riding his road bike, kayaking and reading. He and Sondra were fortunate enough to be able to take multiple cruises and travel to several European countries, including Russia, the British Isles and many European countries. Larry was a member of Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (MVUUF) in Centerville.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 PM on September 9, 2021 at Baird Funeral Home in Troy. A small gathering is planned to celebrate Larry’s life on September 12, 2021.
