INDIANAPOLIS – Karl G. Garwood, age 73, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, at Bridgewater Health Care Center, Carmel, Indiana.
Born on January 18, 1949 in Troy, Ohio, Karl was son of the late Ernest and Christina Garwood. In addition to his parents, Karl was also proceeded in death by father-in-law Kenneth Harvey of Troy, and niece Alea Branson of Piqua.
Karl is survived by his wife of 42 years, Katherine Harvey Garwood of Indianapolis, daughters Cindy Ernst and family of Tipp City and Jennifer Dean and family of Tipp City, sisters Judy (Bob) Long of Troy, Karan (Audie) Smith of Piqua, and brother Jay (Missy) Garwood of Indianapolis, mother-in-law Ruth Harvey-Herron of Troy, brothers-in-law Randy (Kim) Harvey of Troy, and Bryan (Amy) Harvey of Troy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Karl was a graduate of Troy High School. His early career was spent at BF Goodrich, Long’s VW Garage, and Foreign Car Repair, but his true career was spent as an Indy Racing crew member and engineer. Karl worked for Dick Simon Racing, Kelley Racing, and Patrick Racing, which enabled him to travel the world, and he spent winters in Arizona, testing and practicing.
Karl was an avid auction attendee, and in retirement he and Kathy would go to Indianapolis-area auctions nearly every day, searching for vintage toys and sports collectables.
The family has planned a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, Ohio on Wednesday, April 27, at 2 PM, with the Reverend Frank Rupnik officiating. Donations in Karl’s memory can be made to either the United Way of Indianapolis, or the United Way of Troy.
