Evelyn Sheafer Obituary

Evelyn L. Sheafer, age 89, of Troy, Ohio, passed away April 6, 2021 at Troy Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Born June 5, 1931 in Piqua, Ohio to the late Ray and Bertha Rhoades. Evelyn married Harold Sheafer January 28, 1954.

She is survived by her three children Marc Sheafer of Covington, Mari (Jeff) Snipes of Christiansburg, and Matt (Anne) Sheafer of San Pierre, IN along with her sister Opal Holfinger.  Also survived by her five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband, Harold Sheafer, brother Cletus (Pauline) Rhoades and brother-in-law Carl Holfinger.

Along with helping her husband on the farm, Evelyn was always one to stay busy. She ran a draperies and slip cover business out of her home for 17 years. Worked as a shop-at-home consultant for Elder Beerman stores. Served as a 4-H advisor for 25 years. Was an active member of the Troy Chamber of Commerce where she served on the board of directors along with several committees.  She became a downtown Troy merchant in the 1980’s when she opened EVE, a store specializing in larger-size clothing for women.  Later in her career, Evelyn was actively involved in consulting for the Small Business Administration helping new entrepreneurs start or expand their business. She was also the director of the Western Ohio SBDC and taught at the Upper Valley JVS Adult Division.

It wasn’t all about work though. With her good friend, Judy Rose, they organized the painting of barn quilt squares throughout Miami County adding beauty to the rural landscape. Evelyn was a self-described optimist that always stayed young at heart. She loved to read and spend time with friends and family.  No matter where she went, she always found someone that knew her.
