Doris Jean Lewis Obituary

Doris Jean (Starry) Lewis, 92 of Troy, passed away at home on Thursday, July 29, 2021.

She was born August 17, 1928, outside of Casstown, Ohio (Lost Creek township) to Alice May (Johnston) and Clyde Henry Starry.

She married Russell Thomas Lewis on January 19, 1946 in Ashland, KY.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Russ (May 2007), son Russell Thomas Jr “Tom” (Jan 2001), sisters Mary Davis, Marjorie Gray and brother Herbert “Jerry” Starry.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Becky Knight of Huber Heights, Judy (Mike) McEldowney of Tipp City, and Diana (Danny) Boling of West Liberty. 16 grandchildren: Jeff, Mindy, Misty, Jason, Rachel, Andrea, Karen, Kristina, Randy, Eric, Betsy, Mykal, Dwayne, Dawn, Danielle, and Derrick, 35 great and 9 great great grandchildren.

Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Carol and Edie and brother-in-law Ralph.

Doris was a 1946 graduate of Troy High School.

She worked at WACO in Troy, and later AO Smith in Tipp City, retiring with 31 years as a coil winder. After retirement, she volunteered at Hayner Cultural Center.

Genealogy was her passion. Her conversations included names you never heard of. She could recite dates like a computer. Information you may not have wanted to know about ancestors, but you got it anyway.

Doris was an avid bowler earning many awards. Bowling was a Lewis family activity. They were also members of the Moose Lodge and Eagles in Troy.

Her love of euchre meant lots of serious competition. Who wins the bragging rights of the card game, men or women?

She was very proud of her family military veterans, whether it was Navy, Army, or Air Force. All of them were recognized with an engraved brick either at the Troy or Piqua Veterans’ memorials. Even ancestors that served in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Doris will be remembered as a strong-willed woman, very outspoken and opinionated. She believed she was invincible. Not quite making it to her 93rd birthday, she was the 2nd oldest member on her family tree.

Service will begin at 2PM Thursday, August 5th, Baird Funeral Home, 555 N Market St, Troy, Ohio. Visitation will be held Wednesday August 4th 4-7PM and 1 hour prior to the service Thursday.
