Charles E. "Ted" Lyons Obituary

Charles E. “Ted” Lyons, age 86, of Troy, OH passed away unexpectedly at home on October 30, 2020. He was born November 7, 1933 in Brewster, OH.

Ted is survived by his wife of 64 years: Mary Jo (Mathias) Lyons; his children; Mike (Pam) Lyons of Troy, Tim (Julie Morici) Lyons of San Jose, CA, Amy (Doug Vann) Lyons of Tipp City; his grandchildren: Christina (Zachary) Roberts, Mitch (Mary Allison) Lyons, Kyle (Julie Anna Scott) Lyons, Daniel McCormick, Brady McCormick, and Riley (Brianna) McCormick; and his great grandchildren: Ellie, Thomas, Westley, Abel, Freeman, Rose, and Maeve.

Ted was a member of the US Army Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a proud alumni of the New Philadelphia High School, Valparaiso Technical Institute and The Ohio State University. Ted retired as owner of The Lyons Corporation, an electronic component sales company, which he founded in 1971.

There are many in our community who have had the privilege to know “Coach Lyons”.  Ted always saw the potential in young athletes and worked to help them realize it themselves, often inspiring and encouraging kids to accomplish more than they ever thought possible. Teams he coached over the decades include: Troy Merchants Little League Football, Troy Dolphin Swimming and Diving, and Piqua YMCA Swimming.  He also Co-founded the Tri County Swimming and Diving League.  His love for athletics in our community was evident by his continual support of the Troy High School football, wrestling and basketball teams. He has also served on the board for the Troy High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ted was a man of great faith. He served as a leader with the men’s ministry at Ginghamsburg United Methodist church, a leader with Dads of Destiny and was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Troy.

Ted was active on the board of the Miami County Liberty Group. He never shied away from a political conversation and deeply enjoyed debating ideas about politics.

Passionate about his own fitness, Ted belonged to Practice Crossfit and completed his final work out on Wednesday, October 29th.

Ted will be remembered for his ornery sense of humor, his commitment to excellence, his ability to make friends out of strangers, his prayers at family gatherings, his steadfast devotion to his family, and his unwavering support of his children, grandchildren, and great grand children. We miss you Grandpa.

Our family would greatly enjoy reading your memories of Ted and hearing what he meant to you at www.bairdfuneralhome.com.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial gifts can be made to “Trojan Athletics Hall of Fame”, go to www.thetroyfoundation.com to contribute in Teds honor.
