Obituary

William Custer Twiss William Custer Twiss, age 80, formerly of Troy, Ohio, more recently of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, passed away at 2:31AM on Friday, June 5, 2009 at his daughter's residence after an extended illness. He was born on October 10, 1928 in Erie, Pennsylvania, to the late William Brandt and Mary Margaret Custer Twiss. His wife of 23 years, Linda Jones Twiss, survives. In addition to his wife, Linda, William is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: William Douglas and Diane Twiss of Troy and Robert Custer and Janet Elizabeth Christie Twiss of Troy; four daughters and three sons-in-law: Sally Ann Twiss and partner, Dr. James Sims of Troy, Susan Elizabeth and Mark Alan Welty of Troy, Sandra Lee and Larry Stephen Smith of Troy and Sharon Patricia and Billy Joe Emerick of Troy; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law: Micole Miki and James Beachler and Stacey and Scott Reeves; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. William graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1946. He was involved in starting the Huber Heights Y.M.C.A.; he was president of Civitan Club; a 32nd degree Free Mason; and an Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Troy. He was involved with Women's Recovery House of Troy and the Tri County Mental Health Recovery. He was instrumental in bringing the Billy Graham Crusade for Christ to Troy in 1972. In 1973 he was Troy Country Club Golf Champion and in 1978, he became Troy Country Club President. He was most recently owner and president of W.C. Twiss and Associates. Before starting his own business, he was Sales Manager for Penn Brass and Copper in Erie, PA. One of the most important accomplishments of his life was 19 years of sobriety with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous. Private family services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009 with Rev. Dr. Richard Culp officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. Friends may call from 2-5PM Sunday at the funeral home.
