Obituary

William McGregor Dixon, age 91, of Troy, Ohio, died on November 29, 2014 at his home. He was born on December 18, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Ray E. and Marjorie (McGregor) Dixon. He married Donna C. Dixon on December 22, 1947, and she preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sons: W. McGregor (Jody) Dixon, Jr. and Gary C. Dixon (Nancy Hesz); grandchildren: Teckla (Tim) Patterson, McGregor Dixon III, Carey Dixon, Rosa Dixon, Emily (Jared) Drury and Melissa Gall; Son in law: J.T. Gall; cousin: Donald McKillop and great grandchildren: Ava and Jett Drury.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Dixon was preceded in death by his daughter: Christine R. Dixon; and brother: Robert Dixon.

Mr. Dixon attended junior high school in Piqua and received his diploma from Middletown High School. He attended Miami University before serving in the Army including overseas service in Germany and France. Upon returning from the service and receiving his bachelor's degree  in Economics from Miami University in 1946, he attended the University of Cincinnati Law School and graduated in1948. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. He passed the bar exams in Ohio and Michigan in 1949 and was admitted to the federal bar in 1954.

Mr. Dixon opened a law office in Piqua in 1949 and was appointed as an assistant prosecuting attorney in 1950. He was village solicitor of Fletcher from 1952-1957. After relocating to Troy, he practiced law with Harley Enyeart for two years and Ellis Kerr for four years. In 1953, he wrote a "Judicial History of Miami County" for the Troy Historical Society. Dixon served as city solicitor for the city of Troy from 1956-1965. He practiced law with Shipman, Dixon and Livingston (and its predecessor) from 1966 until his retirement in 2009, which included thirty-five years of practice with his son Greg. He was a member of the Miami County (President 1959), Ohio State (Council of Delegates, 1958-1959) and American Bar Associations..

As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, Mr. Dixon served as Church School Superintendent, senior high teacher and as an ordained elder on numerous occasions. Mr. Dixon was moderator of the Miami Presbytery, served on various committees with the presbytery and the Synod of the Covenant. He was elected to represent the presbytery to represent at the national General Assembly meeting on two different occasions.

Mr. Dixon was the Troy Jaycee's "Outstanding Young Man of the Year" in 1955. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the Troy City Education Association and the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce in 1991. February 8, 2005, was declared William M. Dixon Day in the City of Troy.

Mr. Dixon helped organized the Miami County branch of the Miami University Alumni Association in 1950 and served as its first president. He served two terms on the Miami University Alumni Association and was its national president in 1960-1961. He served additionally on the Development Council for two terms and was awarded the Miami University Alumni Award in 1975.

Mr. Dixon served on the board of trustees of the Troy-Miami County Public Library for over 36 years. He was president of the Troy Jaycees, president of the Troy Kiwanis Club, president of the predecessor to Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities, helped organize Troy's Dollars for Scholars, Troy Housing Opportunity United, served on the Troy Human Rights Commission, and served on the board of Brunker Nature Center. In addition he was involved with Aullwood Audubon Center, Hayner Cultural Center, Earlham College Parent's Association and other wildlife organizations.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, Troy with Rev. Dr. Richard B. Culp officiating, friends may call on the family from 10:00-11:00 AM on Saturday at the church with lunch served after the service.
