Theodore M. York, 67, went to be with the lord at 10:15 am on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Springfield Masonic Community in Springfield, Ohio. Ted battled frontal temporal lobe dementia for nearly 15 years prior to his death.
He was born April 23, 1946, in Troy, to the late Gale "Porky" and Bernice (Widener) York. Ted is survived by his wife, Darla Donley York; a son Justin (Melissa) of Chicago, Illinois; a daughter Tegan (Tom) Carr of Silver Spring, Maryland; a step-son Andrew Smith of Troy; and four grandchildren, Ethan York, Norah York, Kelsey Carr and Griffin Carr. He also is survived by his older sister, Rebecca York of Centerville, her son (Tyler) and two daughters (Traci and Kirsten); a sister-in law Cindy York of Jackson, Michigan and her daughter (Alyn). His older brother, Douglas Widener York and a nephew (Eric ) preceded him in death.
Ted attended Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church of Tipp City. He was a 1964 graduate of Troy High School and 1969 graduate of Ohio University where he majored in communication with an emphasis on broadcasting. Ted began his career as the floor director for The Phil Donohue Show when it was in Dayton, Ohio. He also served in the United States Army Reserves. He later worked at Channel 2 News in Dayton; as a floor director and host of a cable show in New Jersey; a salesman at David Shoes in Troy and finally as a solid waste resource coordinator at the Sanitary Engineering Department of Miami County.
Ted was active in the Troy community serving as a member of the Optimist Club and volunteer for the Troy Strawberry Festival. He enjoyed photography, traveling, playing the drums and laughing and spending time with family and friends.
Visitation hour will be from 2:00-3:00 pm Sunday, February 9 2014 at Baird Funeral Home in Troy with a Celebration of Life Service following at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in honor of Ted to The Association of Frontal Temporal Degeneration ( http://www.theaftd.org ) or Heartland of Hospice ( http://www.heartlandhospice.com ).
