Russell Dean Smith Russell Dean Smith passed away peacefully at home on the morning of June 9, 2011 under Hospice care after a long and difficult illness. He was born January 12, 1934 in Athens County, Ohio. and was preceded in death by his parents, Robert A. Smith and Margaret Bean Smith. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Richard Smith, Robert C. Smith and sisters, Mary Harrington and Wanda Morehead. Surviving Mr. Smith are his wife of 54 years, Maxine Rose Smith and his children, Mary Cassandra Bill Myers, Keely Jane Rick Quillen, and Kevin Ray Smith. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Michael Quillen, Stephanie Quillen Williams and Dan Myers. Great grandchildren, Malachi and Lavante Williams, Elijah Adkins, Madeline Quillen and Arianna Freistuhler. He is survived by one sister, Rebecca Mitchell and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith graduated from Athens High School, Athens, Ohio in 1952 and from Ohio University in 1956. Following graduation from Ohio University Mr. Smith served in the Army Signal Corps, was head of the Athens National Guard, worked on a University/Air Force project and taught while working on his masters at OU. Mr. Smith also worked for NASA in Greenbelt MD during the early days of the weather satelites, specifically Nimbus and Tirrus as well as at the Newark Air Force Base, Newark, OH with Standard Time. He retired from Wright Patterson AFB. Mr. Smith has lived in Troy for 43 years where he has actively served many positions in the First Presbyterian church and mentored in a job coaching program for youth. Friends may visit with the family 1 hour prior to the 3:30 memorial service at the Presbyterian Church, Sunday, June 12, 2011. Reverend David Flemming and Reverend Edward Sensenbrenner will be officiating. Private burial will be at a later date. Local arrangements are being handled by Baird Funeral Home, Troy.
