Richard L. Wood Richard L. Wood, age 76, of West Milton, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at his residence. He was born on March 19, 1933 in Bethel Twp., Ohio, to the late John and Mary Howard Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Gates Wood in 1975. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Long Wood of West Milton, Ohio; four children: Amy Karnehm of Huber Heights, Ohio, Bob Jean Wood of Lansing, Illinois, Steve Patti Wood of Bradford, Ohio and Judy Ned Diers of Pleasant Hill, Ohio; five grandchildren: Mary Jo Wood Raahul Kumar of Brisbane, Australia, John Wood of Lansing, Illinois, Eric Wood of Pleasant Hill, Ohio and Robin and Nicole Diers of Pleasant Hill, Ohio He was a graduate of Troy High School, class of 1951 and attended Tipp City United Methodist Church. Dick retired as manager of purchasing at Miami Industries, Piqua, OH. He was a real estate broker for approximately 50 years. In the past he was actively involved with Boy Scouts and with various youth groups including 4-H and baseball. He was past president of Newton PTO. Dick was a designer of many special machines. In fact, he designed the hydraulic salt spreader that is used on the back of many highway trucks. He was an antique car and motor scooter enthusiast and truly enjoyed the hobby. In 1973 he received the James Milton award for the best restored automobile in the United States...his 1911 Ford. He also received the John A. Stynoski Award in 1974 which was the international award for the best restored automobile. He enjoyed membership in many antique auto clubs which included Piqua Antique Car Klub founding member, Vintage Chevrolet Club of America-Miami Valley Region, AACA, Antique Studebaker Club and the International Salsbury Restorers Society. More recently he was well-known for his yearly Christmas visits to shut-ins when he took them fruit and candy. He was a wonderful, caring man who loved life and was deeply loved by his family and friends. He fought a valiant and dignified battle with leukemia. A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM Friday, April 3, 2009 at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, with Rev. Burt Wolf officiating. Friends may call from 4-8PM Thursday at the funeral home.
