Raymond Clay Matthews, 91, of Troy, passed away Sunday, January 07, 2007 at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. He was born August 4, 1915 in Ritner, Kentucky. to the late John and Minnie Worley Matthews. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Fannie Hickman Matthews; son Kelly and Gail Matthews of Gambrills, Maryland; 2 daughters Doris and Gary Dankworth, Sr. of Troy; and Darlene and Mike Ellis of Ewing, VA; 11 grandchildren, Kelly Matthews II, Jennifer Matthews Mish, Jonathan Dankworth, Gary Dankworth Jr., Michael Dankworth, Kristin Dankworth Barth, Toby Ellis, Todd Ellis, Timothy Ellis, Tyler Ellis, and Trevor Ellis; 15 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Marie Matthews Taylor of Conneaut, Ohio; and 4 nieces. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by a brother James Matthews, and two sisters, Dinah Sheetz and Melvina Griffis. Ray loved music and grew up playing the guitar and piano, sang in family quartets, and taught singing schools in both Kentucky and Ohio. He served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a church deacon for many years before moving to Troy in 1974. Ray was a carpenter and retired from Shroyer Bros., in 1978. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Troy and was loved and admired by all who knew him. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2007 from 5:00-8:00 pm at Baird Funeral Home in Troy. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 10:30am at First Baptist Church, Troy with Pastor Dale R. Christian and Pastor Douglas Magin officiating. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. Military honors will be held at graveside. Friends may also express condolences to the family through www.bairdfuneralhome.com.
