Obituary

Mildred L. Slough, walked on this earth 101 years and 10 months. On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2015, Mildred crossed over, and lives eternally, reunited with her beloved husband Carl, and is face to face with her Creator.

Mildred Slough, born January 28, 1914, near Union, Ohio was the oldest daughter of Albert and Bessie (Swartz) Sass. She is survived by her sister, Florence (Raymond) Becker; nephew Dennis (Sharon) Becker; niece and caregiver Darlene (Nick) Mott; and two great nieces: Kelly Mott and her son, Braden Dellinger; and Deanna Mott and her children: Derrick Caruso, Grace Caruso, and Zackary Pogue.

Mildred married her best friend, Carl Slough, February 10, 1934, and together they shared 60 years, prior to Carl's passing February 12, 1994. Carl worked at Montross Lumber and then started his own repair business, with Mildred as constant assistant, glazing and painting window frames, and doing office work.

Carl and Mildred lived on farms in Union; in Fredrick, and west of Potsdam. They were a constant team. They were hard workers on the farm, butchering and canning; endured the Depression Years; were friends to all they met; and were always helping others.

In Sept. 1947, they sold their farm, animals, and equipment and moved to Summit Avenue, Troy. They moved to Staunton Road in 1965. Following Carl's passing in 1994, Mildred moved to an apartment on Leedes Road.

Carl and Mildred became members of the Troy Church of the Brethren March 2, 1949 and helped build the 'new' Church on West Main Street in 1950. Mildred taught Children's Sunday School classes and was active in Women's Fellowship. She led the Sewing Circle and made crafts for the annual church Bazaar. Mildred loved the Lord.

Mildred's mission for 35 years was sending over 4500 cards to church members. She kept a list of all the cards she sent – and even noted which card she sent, so she never sent the same card twice to a person. Mildred often remarked how the postage increased over the years, stating that when she started in 1963, postage was four cents.

Mildred was a good seamstress and also sewed lots of dolls clothes for Kelly and Deanna's Barbie dolls. She enjoyed crocheting and teaching others to crochet.

Mildred was a Life Member of the Troy Senior Citizens Center, where she played Euchre and Bingo, and worked at their Annual Bazaars and Strawberry Festivals.

Mildred enjoyed recalling the past, saying, "Just think how many inventions I've seen in my lifetime!" She would often reflect on the many Presidents throughout her life. She missed her old friends, remarking that she had outlived most all of them!

Mildred was so appreciative and positive, and encouraged others with her contagious smile! She lived a simple life and bloomed where she was planted.

The family thanks the Randall Residence of Tipp City Memory Care Staff for meeting Mildred's needs with loving care. Also, special thanks is extended to Hospice of Miami County for their extraordinary, compassionate services. Mildred really looked forward to frequent visits from Hospice Chaplain John Shelton.

Mildred's instructions to the family were not to cry when passed. She yearned to be set free from the afflictions she has endured lately. Her goal was to be with her beloved Carl again. God granted her wish today. Memories will live on in the hearts of all who knew Mildred. See you at the Gate!

Baird Funeral Home is assisting the family. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Troy, with a graveside service for family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Miami County, PO Box 502, Troy, OH 45373.
