Melvin D. "Big R" Hackett, 74, of Troy, Ohio died on Monday, June 12, 2006 at the Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, Ohio. He was born on September 26, 1931 in Casstown, Ohio to the late Norris and Ellen Evans Hackett. He married Wanda N. Burnside Hackett and she survives his wife of 54 years. Also surviving are their children, son & daughter-in-law; Michael D. & Karen Hackett of Troy, OH; daughters & son-in-law; Bev Frank of Troy, OH; Brenda & Cevin Wagner of Troy, OH; brother & sister-in-law; Gerald & Phyllis Hackett of Troy, OH; four grandchildren, Rodney Frank; Brittany & Rachel Wagner; and Robert Hackett. He is preceded in death by parents, and daughter, Bonita Sue Hackett. He was an elder & member of Troy View Church of God; former Deacon of the Church; former member of the Church Bowling League; member of Troy Fish & Game Club; and received the 2005 Troy Strawberry Festival Golden Couple Award. He served during the Korean War in the US Air Force, serving in South Africa. He enjoyed fishing and his grandchildren. He attended Lostcreek Schools. He retired in 1997 after 42 years of service from A.O. Smith Company; also owned his own business, Hackett's Engraving Company, doing engraving for the county fair and other organizations. Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 16, 2006 at 2:00PM at the Troy View Church of God, with Pastor Stephen Zimbelman officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Troy, Ohio. There will be special Veteran Honor Guard services at the graveside. Friends may call on the family on Thursday, June 15, 2006 from 5-8PM at the Baird Funeral Home, Troy, Ohio. Contributions may be made to the Troy View Church of God Building Fund.
