Mary Belle Shroyer
Mary Belle Shroyer of Troy, passed away February 15, 2016. She was born on March 9, 1929 in Lancaster, Kentucky to John L and Malissa Smith. She grew up on the family farm in Lancaster, Kentucky before going to college. She graduated from the Bethel Woman's College in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. After graduation she moved to Troy, Ohio and worked at Aero Products. She is survived by her husband Irving H. Shroyer. They were married on January 30, 1954 and had three children. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. In December they took their entire family on a cruise.
She served as a substitute teacher in the Troy City Schools and later served as the school secretary at Kyle Elementary School. Principal Michael Beamish referred to her as his "best guest teacher" and hired her as his secretary for Kyle School in 1976. She worked at Kyle School for over a decade. She loved her job and took great pride in her work. She valued education and dedicated all of her earnings to provide a college education to her children.
She leaves behind her loving family which includes her husband, Irving, and her children David Shroyer (wife, Susan Brown), an attorney in Columbus, Gary (wife, Melisa) Shroyer, an attorney in Columbus, and Suzanne (husband, James) Crump, a school teacher in Centerville, as well as her sister and best friend, Hazel (husband, Charles) Begovich of Troy, Ohio and brother, John (wife, JoAnn) Smith Jr. of Lancaster, Kentucky. She was a loving grandmother to six grandchildren, Tyler Shroyer, Sarah Shroyer, Amanda Shroyer, Jenna Shroyer, Elizabeth Crump and Matthew Crump.
Mary Belle was a "soap box derby mom" for her sons and a "horseshowing mom" for her daughter. She later became the biggest fan at her grandchildren's events. She attended hundreds of her grandchildren's soccer matches, track meets, baseball, field hockey and football games. She also enjoyed the grandchildren's academic, musical and religious events.
She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Troy, Ohio.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 20, at the First United Methodist Church at Troy with interment at Riverside Cemetery in Troy after the service. A reception will be held at First Place Christian Center following the interment. Visitation will be held at Baird Funeral home on Friday from 4-7 PM.
