Mary Etta Kauffman Mary Etta Kauffman, age 98, of Troy, Ohio, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2008, at SpringMeade, Tipp City, Ohio. She was born in Miamisburg on June 17, 1909, to Harry and Clara Hurst Weaver. She graduated in 1927 from Miamisburg High School and attended Miami Jacobs College in Dayton, graduating as Valedictorian in 1929. She worked for the law firm of Toulmin & Toulmin in Dayton until her marriage to Harry L. Kauffman in 1931, when they moved to Troy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1983; her daughter, Nancy Bennett in 2008; three sisters, Barbara and Clara Marie Weaver and Joan Hubbard; and one brother, William Weaver. She leaves behind one daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Don Routson of Troy; son-in-law, Adam Bennett of Trumansburg, NY; five grandchildren, Christine Bennett Houk Jon of Marietta, GA, Douglas Bennett of Deerfield Beach, FL and Bruce Bennett Susan of Louisville, CO, Jon Kirshbaum Beth of Portland, OR, and Chris Kirshbaum Gretchen of Los Angeles; seven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Justin and Tyler Houk, Taylor, Erika and Anna Bennett and Ella Kirshbaum; and one nephew, Bruce Hubbard of Orcas Island, WA. On the day of her birth, the first Wright Brothers airplane flyover occurred over Dayton. Among her early memories was the flood of 1913 and being transported to higher ground with her family in a horse drawn coal wagon. Mary Etta was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Troy and of the Current Events Club for 50 years. She was also an active early volunteer with the Girl Scouts and the Troy Skating Club and more recently at the Hayner Cultural Center and the Friends of the Library book sales. She loved people and enjoyed meeting them and finding treasures at the same time at auctions and garage sales. A memorial service will be held at the First Lutheran Church, 2899 W. Main Street, Troy, on June 21, 2008 at 1:30PM with the Rev. Donald R. Smith officiating. Family will greet friends following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main Street, Troy, or the Brukner Nature Center, 5995 W. Horseshoe Bend Road, Troy.
