Obituary

Konrad Schirmann, age 90, passed away after a brief illness in Troy, Ohio, on January 20. He was born in Nakovo, Yugoslavia to the late Stefan and Anna (Streitmatter) Schirmann.  As a teenage WWII refugee completely separated from his family, Konrad made his way to Linz, Austria where he learned mechanical and electrical trades.  He was married to Elisabeth, his wife of 67 years, in 1953 and they immigrated to the United States in 1956 with their very young daughter, Renate.  Konrad became a U.S. citizen in Muskegon, MI in 1961.  He spent most of his early career as a maintenance manager with Universal Camshaft in Muskegon Heights, MI.  With a very mechanical mind he could fix just about anything; as one of his young grandchildren used to say when anything was broken, "Opa fix it!"  In 1983, after raising his family as a loving father, Konrad moved with Elisabeth to Port Orange, FL with Crane Cams where he worked until retirement in 1996.  At Crane Cams, he successfully leveraged his considerable mechanical skills to design and fabricate automated manufacturing machinery. Konrad is lovingly survived by his daughter Renate (Mike) Strothmann of Norton Shores, MI; son Robert (Linda) Schirmann of Troy, OH; son Ernest (Denise) Schirmann of Lake Zurich, IL; grandchildren Michael Schirmann, Kyle Schirmann, Greta Schirmann, Katie Schirmann, and Matt Schirmann; sister Rosina Quera; brother Ernest Schirmann; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Elisabeth by just 11 days; and one brother, Friedrich Schirmann. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions in Konrad's memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
