Shellhaas

Kenneth D. Shellhaas, age 97, of Troy, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Story Point Assisted Living in Troy. He was born on April 27, 1924, in Troy, to the late William A. and Aletha S. (Young) Shellhaas. On January 5, 1944 in Troy, he married Glenna M. (Warner) Shellhaas and she preceded him in death on October 29, 2003.
He is survived by three children: Connie (Mark) Goldner and Debra (John) Grove, both of Troy, and Lee (Debbie) Shellhaas of Huber Heights; 8 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one infant sister; and two brothers: William Shellhaas and Donald Shellhaas.
After graduation from high school, Kenneth applied for and was granted deferments due to farming until February 1945 when he entered the U. S. Army. He completed basic training at Camp Fannin, TX, which was also a POW camp holding German prisoners. Kenneth was made a squad leader with the 63rd Infantry Division. While on a ship heading to Japan, World War II ended. He and his outfit saw occupational duty in the Philippines and Korea. After he returned home with an honorable discharge from the Army as a Technical Sergeant in December 1946, Kenneth farmed for several years before working 30 years as a truck driver for Dinner Bell in Troy.
Kenneth is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Troy. Together he and Glenna grew beautiful flowers of all kinds and he helped her enter roses in competition shows. Kenneth loved watching Ohio State football and basketball games. Some other activities he enjoyed were fishing, walking, lots of yard work and, most importantly, spending time with his family.
Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at Baird Funeral Home in Troy with Pastor Chris Heckaman officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Troy with full military honors provided by US Army and Veterans Memorial Honor Guard of Troy. Family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Saturday at funeral home.
