IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Edgar
Hahnel
February 11, 1955 – September 12, 2014
JOSEPH EDGAR HAHNEL
Joseph Edgar Hahnel passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014. He always considered Troy, OH his home and spent most of his 59 years here. Joe was born to Marilyn and Joe on February 11, 1955 in Dayton, OH. As a child, he was the funny one with the curly red hair – and temper to match.
His dog, Sweetie, was his closest companion for many years. His second love was music. Joe was an accomplished musician, performing on the guitar, drums and keyboards. He enjoyed spiritual, folk and light rock music. Joe was an integral part of the group Sing Out, Troy. Drumming for Sing Out was something he had in common with his brother, Jeff.
After graduating from Troy High School, Joe later received a Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from the University of Missouri. He volunteered for various nursing homes and also church groups and played with friends in a few night clubs. Despite his health problems for many years, Joe never gave up his strong voice or religious faith. He was a member of First United Church of Christ in Troy. He valiantly attempted to master the computer, but found trips to the park or root beer stand more enjoyable. He lived on his own as long as possible, with the loving support of his Step Father and his Aunt Carol, and looked forward to those special deliveries of milkshakes, chicken noodle soup and homemade cookies. He was a great friend, teacher and soul connection for his sister, Chris, who misses him more than words can convey. Joe recently said that while the music was still in his head, it just couldn't make it to his hands anymore.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Gerhard Hahnel Hennessey, father, Joseph Louis Hahnel and beloved maternal grandparents, Mae and Edgar Gerhard. Joe is survived by his aunt, Carol Gerhard of Piqua, OH, Step Father, Richard Hennessey and wife, Alice, of Tipp City, OH, Sister, Chris Hahnel of Columbus, OH and brother, Jeff Hennessey of Troy, OH, as well as several cousins.
The family is grateful to the staff of the Koester Pavilion for their care.
