John Dexter Marshall, formerly of Troy, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, at the Hoover Haus in Grove City, Ohio. He was born on February 15, 1930, in Hammond, Ind., to the late June Claude and Anna (Baumgartner) Marshall. He married Marianne (Viel) in 1960, and she preceded him in death in 2003.
Known for his infectious smile, joking manner and enduring optimism, Dexter enjoyed playing tennis, bridge and spending time with family and friends. He was a 45-year member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Troy, where he served as a lector, RCIA sponsor and communion distributor.
A proud graduate of Marquette University, Dexter had a long, satisfying career as an electrical engineer, including as a consultant for his own business, J.D. Marshall Associates, which he continued to operate into his 90s. He was a member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the National Society of Professional Engineers. He also served his country as a Specialist 4th Class in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.
Dexter is survived by his children: Christopher (Kerrie) Marshall of Grove City, Ohio, and their children Ashley, Amanda, and Aaron; Elizabeth (Allan) Avery of Ada, Mich., and their children, Emily, Jessica, Brett, and Bridget; Andrew (Lauren) Marshall of University Heights, Ohio, and their children Jacqueline and Lucy; Matthew Marshall of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and Jane Marshall of Tempe, Ariz.; and great-grandson Altay. In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by his sister June (John) Killigrew of Brockport, N.Y.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Troy with interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, at Baird Funeral Home, Troy. Memorial Contributions can be made in Dexters' name to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
