Joel Dennis Armstrong passed away July 3, 2010, after battling Parkinsons for nearly 30 years. Joel was born in Lake Villa, Illinois, on February 5, 1940, to the late James Leonard and late Bernice Armstrong, the second of five sons. Armstrong graduated from Antioch High School in 1958 and married Kathleen Scully of Antioch, Illinois. Together, they had two sons, Mark Thomas, in July of 1963, and Matthew James, in May of 1967. Armstrong was an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman and spent many years hiking, fishing, camping, and skiing with his family. Along with owning his own ski shop, Joi du Ski, Armstrong was an engineer for Outboard Marine Corporation and Addressograph Multigraph for sixteen years before moving to Troy, Ohio, in 1978. He worked for Hobart Corporation for twelve years, and subsequently moved to Simpsonville, SC in 2000. Armstrong is survived by his wife, Kathleen, his sons Dr. Mark Armstrong Cameron and four grandchildren Andy Jane, William, Jackson, and Calvin of Troy, Ohio; Matt Armstrong Michelle and one granddaughter Hayley of Simpsonville, South Carolina; and a foster son, David Gruthoff Christine of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by two brothers, Jack Armstrong of Lake Villa, Illinois, and Dale Armstrong of Minot, North Dakota. He was preceded in death by two brothers. A memorial service was held in Simpsonville on July 16, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Canine Assistants, 3160 Francis Road, Milton, GA 30004.
