James William
Funderburg
November 1, 1930 – August 4, 2002
James William Funderburg, age 71 died Sunday, August 4th in Troy, Ohio. Mr. Funderburg was born of the late, Haziel S. and Gladys E. Byram Funderburg. Mr. Funderburg attended the Piqua City School, graduating in 1948. He joined Citizens National Bank that same year and while employed there attended the Dayton Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and also graduated from the Ohio School of Banking at Ohio University. Mr. Funderburg and his family moved to Troy in 1964 where he was named the Director of Taxation, Billing and Collection in the fall of 1967. He continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1994. During that time he was instrumental in the establishment of the Public Employees Credit Union of Miami County which continues to thrive today. He was the Past President of the Troy Lions Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. During his lifetime, Mr. Funderburg served on the Board of Directors of the Miami County YMCA, was a past President of the Y-Men's Club and was the Vice Chairman of the American Red Cross's regional blood program. Mr. Funderburg was a member of the Army's 101st Airborn Division from 1951-1953. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan where he served as a Military Policeman. Jim Funderburg was married for over 50 years to his wife, Joan Higgins who survives, and was the proud father of two sons, James Wayne and his wife, Kathy of Bryan, Ohio; Thomas Craig and his wife, Susan of Troy, Ohio. He has five grandchildren including Nathaniel and his wife, Rachel of Piqua; Nicholas of Blackburg, VA; Philip of Piqua; Hannah and Austin of Troy, Ohio. He also is survived by four step-grandchildren, Penny Roth, her husband, Mike both of Sylvania, Ohio. Niki Warncke, her husband, Matt Davis of Columbus, Ohio; and two step-greatgrandchildren, Cami and Chris Roth of Sylvania, Ohio. His sister, Joan and her husband, Lewis reside in Piqua area along with several nieces and nephews. Mr. Funderburg is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Eleanor Higgins of Troy. Jim was a caring, considerate man, who loved his family and his country and was very proud to serve the City of Troy for almost 30 years. He was an avid Troy sports fan and he and his wife could always be found in the stands rooting the High School and American Legion teams to victory.
