Shroyer
September 3, 1925 – May 30, 2025
Irving Henne Shroyer, age 99, of Troy, OH peacefully passed away on May 30, 2025. He was born September 3, 1925 in Dayton, OH to the late Dr. Franklin Irving and Mary Anna Barbara (Josse) Shroyer.
Irving ("Bud") is survived by his children: David Shroyer (attorney) and wife Susan Brown; Gary Shroyer (attorney) and wife Melisa; and Suzanne Shroyer Crump (teacher) and husband James; grandchildren: Tyler Shroyer and fiancé Megan McCrohan; Sarah, Amanda and Jenna Shroyer; Elizabeth and Matthew Crump; many nieces and nephews; brother in law Charles ("Pete") Begovich; brother in law and spouse John and Joann Smith; and sister in law Barbara Shroyer. In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Belle (Smith) Shroyer; brother, Franklin D. Shroyer and his spouse Louise; brother, Dean E. Shroyer; sister, Mary Katherine Colwell and her spouse Terry Colwell; and sister in law, Hazel Begovich. Bud lovingly cared for his wife in their home until she passed away in 2016.
Bud was a 1944 graduate of Oakwood High School. He attended The Ohio State University before receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Science from the University of Dayton. He also studied for a post graduate year at Wittenberg University.
Bud was the Chief Chemist at Hobart Brothers Co. for 34 years from 1957 until his retirement in 1991. He was the supervisor of the chemical, metallurgy, X-ray and spectroscopy research laboratories for Hobart Brothers, which manufactured welding electrodes used worldwide. Prior to moving to Troy, he was a Chemical Analyst at Armco Steel in Middletown and Chief Chemist at Delco Products. He attended and presented at numerous seminars throughout his career on topics involving metallurgy. He was a longtime member of the American Chemical Society.
Bud also had been in charge of managing the day to day affairs of Mary Manor Farms. This farm has been in the Shroyer family for over 170 years since 1854. Bud was a member and one of the first directors of the Arabian Horse Society of Ohio and arranged the first meeting held at Mary Manor Farms in 1954 to establish the Ohio Arabian Horse Society.
Bud was a long standing member of First United Methodist Church in Troy. He was also a member of many professional groups including the American Society for Metals, the American Chemical Society and the Society of Applied Spectroscopy. He was also a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge in Troy.
Bud was very active in the activities of his three children growing up. He was a baseball coach for many years, attended horse shows throughout the summers with his daughter and was a Soap Box Derby "dad" for his sons.
Although he was 99 years of age, he had the mind and physical agility of a much younger man allowing him to be actively involved in his grandchildren's lives. He attended hundreds of soccer matches, track meets, baseball games, field hockey games and football games, many of which required out of town travel. He also enjoyed his grandchildren's academic, musical and religious events. Bud was an avid bowler. He loved gardening, looking for mushrooms, fishing and spending time with his entire family, especially at the family farm. Bud will be greatly missed by all his family and loved ones.
