Howard Bradford Cary, 81 died Saturday November 10. His wife, Harriet Harmony Cary of Troy, Ohio, his son Robert Bradford Cary of Sebastopol, California and his daughter Janet Elizabeth Laabs and Son-in-Law Dennis Laabs of Rochester Hills, Michigan, survive him. He is also survived by his four Grandchildren Jennifer and Neal Laabs and Shepley and Lila Schroth-Cary and by his two brothers Lowell Cary of Van Nuys, California and David Cary of Columbus, Ohio Howard was a graduate of North High School of Columbus, Ohio and The Ohio State University of College of Engineering. After Graduation and Marriage to Harriet, Howard served during WWII in the Navy. His Devotion to the Welding Industry started at the Battele Institute in Columbus. After working for Fisher Body during WWII, Howard and Harriet moved to Marion, Ohio where he became the General Manager for the Marion Power Shovel Company. In 1960 the family moved to Troy, Ohio. During his tenure at Hobart Brothers Howard served as Technical Director of the Hobart Welding Institute and Vice President of Hobart Brothers. While at Hobart, Howard helped develop the MIG welding processes and the commercial use of welding robots and may other technical innovations. He also was an avid supporter of welded sculpture and encouraged Welding Training for artists. He was elected the President of the American Welding Society in 1980. He authored the engineering textbook Modern Welding Technology. Howard was a resident of Troy, Ohio for 40 years. He was a Deacon and an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, Ohio. A Memorial Service is planned for the afternoon Friday, November 16th at the First Presbyterian Church, Troy, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church 20 S.
