Obituary

Helen DeWalt Speer, 87, of Troy, Ohio died suddenly on Friday, July 14, 2006 at her residence. She was born January 17, 1919 in Oakmont, PA to the late George Homer and Frances Louise Harms DeWalt. She married James Fulmer Speer, husband of 60 years and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Speer of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada; Virginia Speer Rev. Gerald King of Springfield, Ill.; brother & sister-in-law; John & Jane DeWalt of Upper Saint Clair, PA; cousin, Margaret Mendenhall and her daughter, Helen Semethy both of Pittsburgh, PA; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Speer; Harriet Jewell and Shirley Sandy and a step-grandson, Matthew James King of Springfield, Ill. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Troy; American Association of University Women; an advisor for the Boy Scouts of America, Troop #82 of Troy and a member of the Brukner Nature Center. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Pittsburgh, PA. She retired from Troy Public Schools in 1984; formerly with St. Patrick School and Concord Elementary School and also did private tutoring in homes. Funeral services will be held on Fri., July 21, 2006 at 1:00pm at the First United Methodist Church, Troy. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Troy, Ohio. Friends may call on the family, Thurs., July 20, 2006 from 5-8PM at the Baird Funeral Home, Troy, Ohio. Contributions may be made to Brukner Nature Center. The family extends deepest appreciation to Arlen Davenport of Troy, Ohio; Helen's special friends and the caregivers of Midwest Extended Care; American Nursing Care and Comfort Keepers for their devotion.
