Helen Sanders Nelson Meeker, 78, of Troy died Monday, February 21 at 9:50am at SpringMeade Health Center, Tipp City, Ohio. She was born on August 23, 1926 in Butte, Montana, the daughter of the late George and Helen Sanders Nelson. She graduated from the Madeira School in McLean, Va. She graduated from Briarcliff Junior College and attended the University of Arizona, being a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Bowyer Meeker in 1989, her husband of 40 years and also preceded in death by her two brothers, George & John Nelson. She is survived by two sons and their wives, David Nelson and Becky Meeker of Gloucester, Va., George Nelson and Cindy Meeker of Troy; two daughters and husbands, Jane and Jim Johnson of Troy and Susan Sanders and Bob Naeny of Timonium, Maryland. Also surviving are grandchildren, David, Gordon, Croft, Ashley, Katie, George and John Meeker; Laura and Scott Montgomery, Helen Johnson, Betsy and Josh Deeter; Margaret; Robert and Stuart Naeny; one great-grandchild, Jane Montgomery. Also survived by a sister-in-law; Mrs. Walter B. Peggy Meeker and brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Robert B. and Helga Meeker and sister-in-law; Mrs. John Bea Nelson. Mrs. Meeker, a resident of Troy, since 1954, has been active in civic and church affairs. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Troy; a former group leader in both the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, including three years as chairman of the County Organization Committee of the Girl Scouts. In 1977, she was named to the Distribution Committee of the Troy Foundation, a position she held until 1996. She served as a volunteer worker at Stouder Hospital; served also on the board of the Dayton Art Institute and was a member of the Dayton Junior League. Helen was the great-grand-niece of Sydney Edgerton, the first territorial governor of Montana, and the great-granddaughter of Wilbur Fisk Sanders who was the first United States Senator from Montana. Services will be held at 10:30am Monday, February 28, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, 20 South Walnut Street, Troy, Ohio with the Rev. Dr. Richard Culp officiating. Friends may call at Baird Funeral Home, Troy on Sunday, February 27, 2005 from 3-7PM. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. Memorial contribtuions may be made to The David B. & Helen N.
