Helen L. (Sphar) Butt, age 88, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, at SpringMeade Health Center in Tipp City. A life-long resident of Troy, she is remembered fondly by her family as a diligent and caring wife and mother. Formerly, she worked as a switchboard operator for the General Telephone Company then later for Hobart Manufacturing. A member of the First United Church of Christ, she played an instrumental role in maintaining and growing the church's "Backpack" program providing prepackaged food to school children for their weekend food needs.

Helen was preceded in death by her mother Ida Sphar and her brother, John Sphar, of Troy. She is survived by her husband, Herbert O. Butt, whom she married on March 8, 1947, her sister, Mary (Sphar) Long, her sister-in-law, Phyllis (Butt) Anderson, her children, Linda (Donald) Buirley, Rex (Karen) Butt, Pamela (Mark) Favorite, and Kevin (Nancy) Butt, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Her death was the result of complications from Alzheimer's Disease and, true to her generous spirit and per her request, her body has been donated to OSU for scientific research. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on December 23, 2018 at Baird Funeral Home in Troy.
