Obituary

Eileen Howsmon Katzenberger Eileen Howsmon Katzenberger passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2011, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin at the age of 94. Eileen was born in Dayton, Ohio to Wilfred and Ella Baber Howsmon. She graduated from Stivers High School in 1935 as salutatorian. She attended Berea College in Kentucky, graduating in 1939 with a degree in History. In 1942, she married George B. Katzenberger and they moved to Troy. She taught school at Newton during 1943-44 and then in Troy from 1953 until 1981, teaching Special Education for 21 years. Upon her retirement, she devoted her time and boundless energy to volunteering for many worthy causes. She served on the Troy School Board for eight years and on the Council for Rural Services Head Start Board for 25 years. She taught 55 Alive driving classes for senior citizens. She served as a volunteer for the AARP tax program, Stouder Hospital and Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, and Brukner Nature Center. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild for over 50 years, and served on the Vestry and the Commission on Affirmative Aging of the Diocese of Southern Ohio. The Troy Chamber of Commerce honored Eileen with the Community Service Award in 1994 for her many outstanding contributions to the community through her extensive volunteer work. Eileen was also very active in several Masonic organizations, having attained 50-year status in Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Order of the Amaranth. She was past Worthy Matron of the Troy Chapter #256 of Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter, Trish David Bylsma of Eau Claire, WI , and son, George L. Gloria Katzenberger of Troy; grandchildren-Sara Grump, Emily Joe Grace, Katherine Sagar Sonar, Jennifer Brinley Gary Vollink, and Jonathan Katzenberger; step-grandchildren-Peter Sandi Barclay and Jennifer Russell Christensen; great-grandchildren-Benjamin, Natalie Eileen, and Isaiah Grace; step-great-grandchildren-Aidan and Mackenzie Christensen, Ian and Kamryn Barclay, and Brian Delk; sisters-in-law-Maria and Phyllis Howsmon; and six nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband George and two brothers, John and Wil. Family wishes to thank special friends Phyllis Dawkins and Millie Woryk, who were true friends to the end, keeping in touch to keep Eileen connected with life in her beloved Troy after she moved to Wisconsin in 2010. Eileen was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who was always there for her loved ones when they needed her. She was a selfless person, happiest when helping others. She will be greatly missed but will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved her. In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorials be directed to Troy-Hayner Cultural Center or Brukner Nature Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Troy. Visitation will be held Friday, June 17 from 4-8 p.m. at Baird Funeral Home, and at the church one hour prior to service. Eastern Star service will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday.
