DOUGLAS A. CAMPBELL

DOUGLAS A. CAMPBELL, age 88, of Troy, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Upper Valley Medical Center.  He was born on July 31, 1926 in Troy.  On June 11, 1971, he married Mary Jane (Shroyer) McConnell.  She preceded him in death on October 24, 2013.

Doug is survived by  his children: Skip McConnell and Barb Spigarelli (Kansas), Maryse McConnell (New Hampshire), Shelley and John Denney (Troy), and Joe McConnell and Erik Haagensen (New York); grandchildren Monica and Brian Ellis, Jenniffer and Jay Carlage, Josh and Agustina Boehringer, Michelle McConnell, Marc and Kelly McConnell, Sarah and Justin Owens, Alexandra and Brian Hedrick, Alexis and Rob Bonner, and Aaron Denney; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces: Valerie (Rick) Pittenger and Susan (Mike) Hathaway; and nephew: David (Tonja) Long.  In addition to his wife, Doug was preceded in death by his parents: William and Dorothy (Beck) Campbell; and one sister: Joann Long; and one son: Michael McConnell.

After graduating from Troy High School in 1944, Doug proudly served his country as a member of the US Army during WW II, serving in the Philippines and Japan. He received his Bachelors Degree from Ohio University and his Masters from Peabody College for Teachers (Vanderbilt University). After beginning his 30 year teaching career in Kenton, Ohio, Doug returned to Troy to teach at Forest, Concord, and Culbertson Heights.  He was the first Principal at Cookson Elementary and retired after 16 years in that position.  Doug was a member of First United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of the Democratic Party and served as Mayor of Troy for 12 years.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Baird Funeral Home in Troy.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Troy.  Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.bairdfuneralhome.com .
