IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David E.
Vrabel
February 9, 1954 – July 18, 2025
In the spirit of a life well-lived and a love that defies ordinary description, David E. Vrabel, in the words of his beloved wife, "changed state." He did so at 7:29 PM on July 18, 2025. "Matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. It changes state," his wife, Maryanne, shared, a sentiment that perfectly captured their profound and enduring bond—a partnership of mind, spirit, and unconditional love. He was, in her words, "My light, my life, my love."
David was a man of quiet strength, whose passions were as vast as the open water he loved to sail and as grounded as the earth he explored. He found freedom in sailing, peace in the rhythm of a bike ride, and pure joy in exploring the wild corners of nature. His love was shown through a steady, deep care for everyone around him.
While he may have seemed reserved or stoic to some, his family knew a different man entirely. He was a beloved husband whose unwavering support of his wife and her pursuits was above and beyond. He was the kind of dad who nurtured his daughter Jerilyn's love for science and joyfully shared in her world—the ultimate "girl dad" before it was cool. As a grandad, he was wrapped around his granddaughter's finger and was the world's best hide-and-seek player. He was quick to laugh, quick to tease, and his every action spoke of the profound and constant care he had for those he loved.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Maryanne Ryno Vrabel; his daughter, Jerilyn Ryno Schmidt (Michael); his granddaughter, Eleanor; his brother, Andy Vrabel (Kim); as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.
As per his final wishes, no flowers should be sent. Instead, please consider a donation in his memory to one of these causes: the National Parks Service to preserve the nature he cherished, Ohio Hospice for the compassionate care they provide, or the Paul G. Duke Health Partners Free Clinic to help the community he called home.
