Dick quit high school for a year to help his family during his father's illness. He enlisted in the United States Army and had hoped to serve with his older brother Bill in the Army Air Corp, but after 11 straight, 14 hour days assigned to KP duty he finally relented to serve wherever he was needed. He proudly served in the 182nd Infantry, American Division as a machine gunner in the Pacific Theater on the Islands of Cebu and Leyte during World War II. He was a wounded combat veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star among various other medals for his service to his country. After the War, Dick played baseball in farm teams in Austin and Odessa, Texas. He returned to Ohio and met his wife while both were attending college. He played fast pitch softball for 16 years in Church leagues and the Piqua City League. He was an avid fisherman. He bowled for many years in leagues in Piqua and Covington. He also enjoyed golf and was a lifelong Detroit Tigers baseball and OSU football fan. He retired from Engineering from the General Dynamics Tank Plant in Lima, Ohio. Dick was devoted to his wife and family. He let everyone know he married the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, he was a wonderful husband who loved his family. He was involved in Boy Scouts, bowling, and baseball with his children as a coach, a leader and a teacher. He taught his children how to drive, how to fish and more importantly how to work hard and to love family. Dick may best be described as a man who did his best to do the right thing, who lived large and loved even larger. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
