Merrill W. Landis

Merrill W. Landis, 87, of Troy, OH,  passed away September 25 at Brookdale Senior Living in Troy.  He was born in 1930 in Fowler, Ohio to Paul and Arleen (Bettiker) Landis.

Merrill graduated from Matthews High School in Vienna, Ohio in 1948 and then enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a Naval photographer.   He then went to Ohio State University , graduating with a degree in Architecture.  After graduation he was employed by General Telephone Company in Marion, Ohio, and then for nine years he had his own architectural firm in Marion.  During that time General Telephone acquired the Troy-Tipp Telephone Company in Troy, and Merrill designed and supervised construction of Troy’s new telephone building.

In 1971 he accepted a position with the USDA at Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI.  He was later employed by the State of Wisconsin, working with DILHR and finally with the Department of Health and Social Services, retiring in 1993.

Merrill became an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in the Senior League at Sugar Isle Golf Course and Miami Shores Golf Club.  He also enjoyed his hobby building HO gauge model railroad cars.

Merrill was preceded in death by his infant son, Todd Andrew, his parents, and his brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Ann Landis of Cortland, OH.  He is survived by wife, Linda (Collins), sons  Mark of Cincinnati, and Stuart (Toni) of Madison, WI, and daughters Jane Landis (Andrew Potchik) of Tipp City and Christina (Paul) Velte of Oregon, WI.  Also survived by grandsons Nick and Alex Velte and granddaughters Sarah (Justin) Morris and Cameron Landis.

The Landis family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Brookdale and the staff for all the love and caring they have extended to us the past two years. 

Visitation will be held Friday evening  from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Baird Funeral Home, with private burial on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Miami County. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.bairdfuneralhome.com.
