Loss of a Long time friend

Larry and I have been close friend since meeting at Troy’s Edwards Elementary School in the 4th grade. We rode our bikes miles exploring everything from the river to the railroad to the gravel pit to the courthouse. No one knew Troy any better then we did.
Our friendship never waned. We joined the Troy Daily News first as “paper boys” then working in the mailroom and the press room throughout high school.

Starting in high school we both had keen interest in cars. I tended to get into hot rods while Larry preferred the classics. His first car was a 1947 Nash. It was rusty! We didn’t have much money so we painted it with spray cans (an ugly green). It was a true green monster. He later owned a few Hudsons. At one point he was the proud owner of a late model Hudson …. and then I smashed it in an accident. He was very upset, but you know, he was quick to forgive me.

Frankly, Larry was smarter then I … got better grades and in fact in his junior year he won a State wide contest in History. He continued a strong interest in all aspects of history. You can find many articles he wrote and donated to the Troy Historical Society. He had a keen interest in railroads and was active in the State Railroad Historical Club. Many times over the years I called on Larry when I had questions about the origin or history of anything. He always knew the answer and rarely had to go look it up. One of my prize possessions is a digital file showing hundreds of pictures of sites throughout Miami County of historical significance given to me by Larry.

Larry was a good journalist and served as Editor of several Ohio newspapers. I’m sure he had some awkward moments in his life as a journalist as Larry was a “conservative” and as we are all experiencing today, most newsrooms lean to the lift. Larry always worked for “small town” newspapers and even today many are still more conservative then their big city compatriots.

Over these 68 years Larry and I always kept in contact even though our lives went in different directions. I could always count on him to keep me informed of happenings back home in Troy. Most of our connection these past few years was by computer. I never visited Troy that I did not spend time with Larry. I am very lucky to have had a friend like Larry.

Thanks Tom. Gretchen and I still remember the time you and Larry took us to the river to ride in a boat! It will probably make you feel old when I say that I will be 68 on Nov 1st.

I live in Winter Haven, Fl. now, and Gretchen lives in Simpsonville SC.

We will miss our big brother.
